What is a Music Video?

A music video is a short clip which integrate the music and visuals to promote the sales of the music, however some musicians create music videos for artistic purposes. While it's promoting for the artist as an audience it is exciting to watch the music video and can be entertaining.

Music video's usually use a variety of film making methods. These include documentaries, animation, non narrative techniques such as abstract films etc. Others may be a mixture of these methods such as animation and documentaries. Other videos may not have a set idea, for example the video might just be a live version of the song in the concert. E.g. Beyonce Ft Nicki Minaj's - Flawless Video.

Purpose of a Music Video:

Doing this researched allowed me to be familiarised with the media product we are going to make and what the audience is going to expect from the music video I create with my group. It made me understand that its not just about the technical terms like camera shots, editing, accurate lip syncing. It is also about how we portray our artist in the music video as we are selling the artist as well as the music, so I realised a lot of research needs to go to the star construction, so we have a clear idea of how we want our artist to be like.

Research Into Existing Videos

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory - Using examples from Cher Llyod - Want You Back & Katy Perry - Last Friday Night:

Goodwins theory states that there are 6 key aspects of a music video when it comes to analyzing one:

1) Genre Characteristics - Presenting a relationship between the genre and visuals. For example for Pop a location which may fit in with Pop would be a Bedroom.

2) There is a relationship between Lyric and Visuals - Music Video may match the lyrics of the song for example if one of  the lyrics say 'run' the artist show they are running in the video

3) There is a relationship between Music and Visuals - Shots are edited to beat of the song to portray that there is a relationship between music and visuals.

4) Promote/Sell Artist

5) Frequent Looking at Camera

6) Intertexuality From Films, Other Music Videos etc.

Muieez's Andrew Goodwin Research:

Collating our research on existing music video's allowed us to obtain key elements we need so that our music video is going to be like a real music video. It was important we applied the Andrew Goodwin theory to our research so we can find similarities in music videos where they apply these elements, for example we realised in nearly all music video the similarities are artist frequent looking. This is one of the elements we knew we had to add to our music video, to create a realistic looking music video.

Chosen Genre

As a group we selected the gebre pop covers

Conventions Of Pop:

What Is Pop?

Pop music is generally upbeat music which uses instruments like electric guitars, drums, piano's etc. Pop music is very popular and is mainly listened by teenagers. It originated from the genre rock and roll and is constantly changing as music never stays the same. The word Pop was first used in 1926, in the sense of this type of music having a popular appeal, which in modern days it has become very popular. Pop Music originated from United Kingdom and has been dominated by American and British Music Industries.

Why Did You Pick Pop?

I wanted to find a Pop song as the songs I listen to are mainly Pop and when I am listening to Pop Music I find it easier for me visualize idea's and make an imaginary music video in my head with this genre of music. Therefore I can be very creative with this genre and it would be easier for me to think of ideas. Also I noticed that I watch Pop videos the most out of other genres and prefer it than any other music genre, so I have the most knowledge in this genre and I can use ideas from these other videos in my video.

Pop Music Video Research - Using Examples From Various Pop Songs:

This my Pop Music research I had done, where I looked at various different Pop music videos. I had looked at similarities in these Pop music videos where I could use these to add to my music video.

Mo's Pop Music Research:

Nahim's Pop Music Research:

Doing this research was essential because this research was specific to Pop music video's. We realised that in many Pop music video's they use a lot of bright and bold colours to link with the idea of Pop. As you can see from the 'Bang Bang' slide you can see not only were the location they were in had bold and bright colours but there costumes were very crazy and colourful too which again linked with Pop. Also with this slide you can see there was numerous locations used which we wanted to do because a lot of Pop music video's had more than one location. This is the reason why we wanted to also have more that one location because many other Pop music videos did this and we wanted our music video to be as realistic to the real product as possible. Moreover with the first slide, we found that many Pop music videos had a bedroom in it which is why we wanted one of our locations to be a bedroom scene as it is a typical Pop music video scene. All the research we did from these video's allowed us to get idea's from them and incorporate them into our, helping us make essential decisions for our music video.
